Quality Standards

The Real Food Campaign has as one of its objectives helping to define standards for Nutrient Dense Crops

Primary adviser in this process is Dr Arden Andersen, leading consultant in the field of Nutrient Dense crops and medical doctor.

The standard recommended by Dr Andersen has 4 pieces:

  1. Organic Certification: This is to guarantee that the crops will not have any genetically modified content, or have had toxic chemicals applied to them
  2. Good or Excellent Brix as defined by the chart available at www.highbrixgardens.com. This standard is set due to the fact that is an immediate and inexpensive test to take, and if a crop does not pass it will not pass the next two tests.
  3. Mineral Analysis of the crop that surpasses 125% of the average mineral content for that crop according to the USDA in 1940. This standard is set as the average crop mineral content has been decreasing since standards were first documented by the USDA in 1940
  4. If the crop meets the first three parameters it is proposed that it should be tested for ORAC or anti-oxidant levels.

Jon Frank of International Ag Labs suggests that a soil sample should be a part of the standards process, as if a soil does not have certain mineral levels and ratios it will be impossible to produce a nutrient dense crop.

Bruce Tainio of Tainio Technology and Technique suggests that crop sap pH should be a determining factor, as a pH of 6.4 will guarantee an extremely high quality crop.

This conversation is progressing among specialists in the field, and The Real Food Campaign hopes to help develop a universally satisfactory standard
