What Can Consumers Do?

Ordinary people asking for highly nutritious food is what is going to drive this movement, like wildfire across a prairie.  As a starting point, begin to request nutrient dense food from local farmers, retailers and restaurants.  This may be hard at first as so few suppliers understand what 'nutrient dense' means and unified standards have yet to be adopted.  In the mean time, educate yourself so that you can educate others. Start wading through the literature on this web site, post questions to the 'forum' (coming soon).  Join the RFC, get yourself a refractometer, learn how to use it and start measuring Brix levels for yourself.

By joining the Real Food Campaign we are helping to develop a movement towards educating the world about nutrient dense foods and NDF providers. The Brix index is a cornerstone of this movement.  It measures the amino acid, protein, flavenoid, mineral and sugar content of fruits and vegetables.

Partner with and support local chefs who seek out nutrient dense produce to serve in their establishments.  This is a big step for a restaurant or a food store to take, and they should be supported in any way that you can think of.

Try your hand at gardening.  Implement at home some of the same strategies to increase the nutrient density of your own small yields.  Gardening can be a daunting process if you have never done it, but almost anyone can grow something, even if it's sprouts in your window sill.  Experienced organic or biodynamic gardeners will be fascinated to learn the process of growing NDF's.  Attend one of Dan's workshops and/or view some of the videos that we plan to post to our web site soon.
